From the October Google Webmaster Chat Q &A:
This is important for everyone, but it’s a particular challenge for online retailers. If you’re selling the same widget that 50 other retailers are selling, and everyone is using the boilerplate descriptions from the manufacturer, this is a great opportunity. Write your own product descriptions, using the keyword research you did earlier to target actual words searchers use, and make product pages that blow the competition away. Plus, retailer or not, great content is a great way to get inbound links.
The page title is the single most important on-page SEO factor. It’s rare to rank highly for a primary term (2-3 words) without that term being part of the page title. The meta description tag won’t help you rank, but it will often appear as the text snippet below your listing, so it should include the relevant keyword(s) and be written so as to encourage searchers to click on your listing.
Today we will be publishing our first SEO Review, we we're asked by Nacho, Microsoft MVP and webmaster of Messenger Adictos, a popular Spanish website about Windows Live.
Google Page Rank: 5
Very good page Rank, it could be higher if more focus was placed on the Social Media aspect of the website.
Meta Tags
It has Meta tags for the Title, Description and Keywords, all very important. And it’s customized for each page on the website, this will allow search engines to distinguish and rank multiple parts of the website. Although Keyword density is a little high, perhaps more diversity is needed here.
SiteLinks
Google has successfully generated SiteLinks, this means that your site has become “worthy enough” in the eyes of Google and allows your users to access different parts of your website directly from the search results.
SERPS
Search Engine Results Placement, this is an area where Messenger Adictos could use a lot of SEO work. Currently it ranks #1 for “Messenger Adictos” in Google, Yahoo & Live. But if anyone were to type that into Google you already know that they we’re going to visit you anyway.
I conducted a Rank Check on the other Keywords that they have included in the Meta Tags, but the only one that was ranked was “Messenger 9” on Yahoo @ #116.
More SEO work should be invested in this area, since Organic Search & SERPS are the #1 gateways to bring more traffic into your website.
Conclusion
www.MessengerAdictos.com is search engine friendly, has a lot of users and a good page rank. In order to increase traffic & users more work should be done in the SERPS & Organic Search area.
The Robots.txt file on your website tells search engines how you want them to crawl. Specially which directory or files you don't wan't appearing in the SERPs.
For DNN we should pay special attention to this because you will often see DNN's supporting directories show up in search results.
The easiest way to avoid this by taking this sample Robots.txt file that DotNetNuke.com provides and build your way up from there.
You could use Google's Robots.txt tool to check your Robots.txt file to make sure that all your Ducks are in a row.
Before you go ahead and submit your website to the major search search engines make sure you have all (or most) of your SEO tactics in place. Why? because there is no second first impression. After google indexes your page for the first time it will evaluate when to do it again, if it finds that your site is not "worthy" then it might take weeks or months for it to go and crawil it again.
So make sure you have your Page Titles, Meta Tags, Search Friendly URLs and other SEO Tactics in place before you submit.
We all love free things, right?. We'll then you'd love to take advantage of this free offer. I'll be doing free SEO Website Reviews. I'll do one per week and post the results here on my blog. This will be done by me, not just using some automated tool.
Get rid of LinkClick.aspx, fast!!!!....
The most talked about topic in SEO is often Links, this includes internal links that you have on your site. DotNetNuke does a good job of dynamically creating and maintaining links using LinkClick.aspx, but's it's very poor in terms of SEO because it will get reported as Duplicate Content by the major Search Engines.
Example:
http://www.prestamosenlinea.info/LinkClick.aspx?link=56&tabid=36
This link isn't very SEO or Human Readable for that manner. The easiest way to avoid this is by unchecking "Track Number Of Times This Link Is Clicked?" box when you are making links which will produce this:
